Now to put it into numbers, let’s say you’re a fairly active 25 year old woman about 5’7” in height. Your body, approximately, needs to burn 2000 calories every day to maintain the current weight. All you need to do, to lose weight, is to reduce the amount of calories you eat and your body will start burning the fat to make up for the deficit.

To burn one pound of fat, you need to either reduce or burn (through exercise) 3500 calories. That might seem like a lot but it’s not. It works out as 500 calories a day if you lose this over a week. By burning another 500 calories every day from exercise, you’re going to lose two pounds a week.

Two pounds a week is the most amount of weight you should lose in a week. It’s healthy and can be sustained over time. Any more than this and your body will think its starving and start hoarding fat. One thing people often do is starve in order to lose weight. This is completely unnecessary, and very counterproductive. Don’t forget, your body is a machine. If you don’t give it a minimum amount of fuel, it will start malfunctioning and eventually stop working completely.

That’s the basics that you need to know to be able to understand weight loss. It’s simple math. If you burn a certain amount of extra calories, you will lose a certain amount of weight over time. If you eat extra, you’ll start gaining.

What you should eat:

Food is my addicition but why does certain food make you fat and certain food not have any effect? It boils down to calories. Basically, 1 gram of fat has 9 calories. In comparison, 1 gram of protein or 1 gram of carbohydrates only has 4 calories. Lean meats and complex carbohydrates have lower fat contents; therefore they don’t as many calories as butter scones and fried chicken.

That doesn’t mean you need to eat rabbit food to lose weight, because their are many healthy recipes but you may need to stop drinking. Everything in moderation is probably the best way to go. If you cut certain foods out of your life forever, you will end up resenting yourself and possibly break down and binge on them. To spead up your metabolism you can use supplements, as far as weight loss pills go my favorite for this is green tea pills.

The best way to have healthy and fast weight loss is to make simple substitutions that end up amounting to a weight loss of one pound every week. You can do this by switching to low fat versions of everything you eat (low fat cheese, cream cheese, milk, cookies, ice cream). Just these simple substitutions will take care of a large amount of the deficit you want to build up.

One of the most important things to do while losing weight, and even while maintaining your current weight, is to write down everything you eat. May sound unnecessary and time-wasting but it’s not. It’ll take seconds to enter food you eat onto an online website or software. Once you enter it, you will find out exactly how many calories you had that day, including the nutritional break down of protein, fat, carbohydrates and even other nutrients like calcium. This way you can monitor how many calories you are eating every day without having to resort to guess work. Another good idea is to take a multivitamin, my personal favorite is SeaSilver, which is a liquid vitamin.

Exercise:

People think they can lose weight without exercise. And yes, you can. But the weight loss would not be as fast as it would be if you were to exercise. Just taking a walk around the block at a fast pace will burn a few hundred calories every day, bringing you ever closer to that 3500 calories of deficit you want to work into your lifestyle. You can also enter the exercise you do onto the website or software you use for your food diary, and find out how many calories you burnt.

Lastly, don’t lose heart. Weight loss is difficult, but not impossible. You can experience fast weight loss if you just do as the numbers say and burn more calories than you take in.
